Hunting
Mallards in the Hardwoods
This is quite a unique hunt and uncommon to experience here on Long Island in turn making it a much sort after hunt! You will be gunning on a private 50 acre farm nestled here on the East End literally in the “Shadow of the Big Apple”.
The gunning takes place out of our large comfortable brush blinds which are well thatched for concealment with a variety of natural cover thus blending into the surroundings. The shooting is in remote openings in the green timber exposing these picturesque fresh water ponds. It is here that “The Mallard is King” and the targeted species with its beautifully emerald colored head with purple and blue iridescence as well as being great table fare make it the number one sort after duck in America!
Black ducks, black duck/mallard hybrids and a sprinkling of wood ducks, green wing teal and the occasional shoveler or pintail can appear over the decoys. Intense is an understatement, as those big greenheads continue to circle, your anticipation will absolutely sky rocket. The calling continues as they dip and almost lock up on each pass. Than convinced with more aggressive calling they finally commit, breaking the opening, than oak leafing down through the canopy into a well set rig of hand carved decoys.
This is a half day hunt requiring a minimum of 4 guns.
• You must have a Federal Duck Stamp.
• Gun capacity is no more THREE SHELLS… if your shotgun carries more than three shells, you are required to “Plug” the gun!
